Waking life can often feel surreal. Narratives within dreams can be introduced by one part, successively taken up by others, and developed by interweaving the parts. Like a fugue state - unexpectedly suddenly present; with the inability to recall some or all of one's past.
A trick to induce lucid dreaming is to look at your hands. Do this while you're awake, and after a while, you might notice your hands look odd during your dream. The fingers can be deformed and change when you look at them, which is a signal that you're lucidly aware.
